POSITION: GOVERNMENT RELATIONS DIRECTOR
SALARY: $85,000 - $115,000 DOE +Benefits
JOB LOCATION: ANCHORAGE, AK or JUNEAU, AK
ASEA/AFSCME Local 52 has an opening for a Government Relations Director working in our Anchorage Headquarters and/or our field office in Juneau, Alaska. This position reports to the Executive Director or designee and requires a flexible work schedule which may include evening and weekend assignments and travel. Applicants should have substantial experience in hands-on management of state and/or municipal legislative activities, excellent writing and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong ability to work closely with others and under tight deadlines. Knowledge of or experience with public employee issues and political campaigns in Alaska is preferred.
Examples of Duties:
(1) Assist with development of ASEA’s state and municipal legislative strategy and policy;
(2) Work with ASEA members on specific local or regional issues that affect ASEA policy;
(3) Develop and maintain effective relationships with individual legislators and legislative staff, executive branch, state agencies, and other government officials;
(4) Draft bills, amendments, legislative testimony, issue papers, talking points, letters, and other documents;
(5) Educate Legislators, their staff, and others on ASEA’s position on legislative issues and respond to legislative inquiries concerning ASEA’s position on issues;
(6) Work with coalitions and other groups to advance ASEA’s legislative and policy agendas;
(7) Serve as staff liaison to Central Labor Councils, AFL-CIO Solidarity Table, Public Employee Table, and other committees as required;
(8) Monitor state and municipal legislative activity and provide ASEA officers and staff with updates on legislative activities;
(9) Assist with the operation of the ASEA Political Action Committee (PAC), in compliance with APOC regulations, and advise on endorsements;
(10) Coordinate and represent ASEA PAC at fundraisers and in PAC solicitations, and
(11) Coordinate with the Alaska AFL-CIO on their COPE program.
Employment Standards:
The qualified candidate must have a minimum of three or more years of state legislative experience in Juneau and/or relevant lobbying experience. Other professional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. College degree preferred; however, an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
